The former chief minister had left the Congress and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party some time in early March. His son, former state minister Kumar Bangarappa, had then followed him but returned to the Congress in the last week of March after it turned out that he would not get his father's nod to seek re-election from Soraba constituency in Shimoga district, the family pocket borough.

The Congress has given him a ticket and he will now take on younger brother Madhu Bangarappa who is contesting as a BJP nominee.

S Bangarappa, who is seeking re-election from the Shimoga parliamentary constituency, has launched a diatribe against the Congress for splitting his family.

Their fate would be decided on April 26.
