Moopanar tars Jaya and Karunanidhi with the same brush over Cauvery

Tamil Maanila Congress president G K Moopanar says the vexed Cauvery water dispute with Karnataka was "a question of livelihood" for him, while it was "a question of politics" for Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and All India Anna DMK general secretary J Jayalalitha.

Moopanar made this observation at a press conference in Madras on Monday when asked about Jayalalitha's charge that the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and its ally, the TMC, had betrayed the interests of the state in the Cauvery issue when the United Front was in power at the Centre.

He said the TMC had passed a resolution, when partymen from Thanjavur district met him in Madras recently, blaming the Bharatiya Janata Party government at the Centre for "tilting" towards Karnataka's view on the dispute.

Moopanar said the Cauvery problem was a question of livelihood for him as he hailed from the Cauvery delta region in Thanjavur.

When pointed out that Karunanidhi also hailed from Thanjavur district, Moopanar retorted: "But he is the chief minister of the state."
