SC orders Karnataka to constitute Cauvery riot relief authorityThe Supreme Court has directed the Karnataka government to constitute a Cauvery Riot Relief Authority on or before May 15 to invite claim applications from those affected in the riots during December 1991 and January 1992, following a dispute over the sharing of the river waters with Tamil Nadu. A copy of the Supreme Court judgement was made available to the press today by P R Kuppusamy, convenor of the Cauvery River Protection Committee. A division bench of the Supreme Court, comprising Justice S Rajendra Babu and Justice Phukan , ordered that the CARRA, which would comprise three retired district judges, should be headquartered at Bangalore and hold its sitting in the affected areas. The Supreme Court clarified that any claim before the Authority for relief which had to be met by the state of Tamil Nadu, on account of the incident having taken place in that state, shall be forwarded to the secretary, public department, government of Tamil Nadu for necessary action.
