Judge reserves order on TADA detainees' bail plea

Mysore district and sessions court principal judge Rajendra Prasad has reserved orders on a bail petition moved by 51 Terrorist And Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act detainees till late Monday afternoon.

The hearing began at 11 am and went on for nearly 40 minutes, when the judge heard defence lawyer N Venugopal's arguments.

State government prosecutor Ashwini Joshi told the court that the state had no objection if the accused were granted bail. However, the state government did not move for withdrawal of the case, which was one of forest brigand Veerapan's demand for the release of Kannada film icon Dr Rajakumar and three others.

Abdul Kareem, father of a slain sub-inspector of the Special Task Force, told rediff.com, "I will express my views only after the judgement is delivered."

Some detainees pleaded that they would not be able to pay the surety amount and sought leniency. "They have been languishing in jail for seven years and it will be difficult for them to give the surety amount," Venugopal told the court.
