Cyclonic storm lies east
south-east of Pamban

The severe cyclonic storm, centred over south west Bay of Bengal and expected to move towards the Tamil Nadu coast, was likely to move in the west-north westerly direction and cross the coast between Tuticorin and Nagapattinam on Wednesday morning.

When contacted the area cyclone warning centre in Madras said gales with speeds varying between 140 and 160 kms/hr would be experienced along and off the coast of Ramanathapuram, Tuticorin, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Karaikal from Tuesday night.

Strong wind with speeds varying between 60 to 80 kms/hr was also likely hit the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry during the same period, the sources said.

Widespread rains were likely to occur in the five places while the remaining areas would receive scattered to isolated rains.

The sources said that it was too early to predict when the cyclone will cross the Tamil Nadu coast. Even further intensification of the cyclone could not be ruled out, they said.

The condition of the sea could be rough with waves reaching a height of four metres, especially in Pamban, the centre said.

Fishermen have been cautioned from venturing into the sea. Great danger signal number 10 has been hoisted in Pamban and Rameshwaram ports. Great danger signal number nine has been hoisted in Nagapattinam and number eight, at Tuticorin port.

Local cautionary signal number three had been hoisted in Madras, Cuddalore, Colachel and Pondicherry ports, the centre said.
