China rules out confrontation with IndiaAnil K Joseph in Beijing
China today said it has no intention of adopting a "confrontationist" policy towards India through Beijing's military aid to Pakistan and termed New Delhi's concerns on a Sino-Pak military nexus as "unfounded". "China has no intention of waging a confrontationist policy with India through military aid to Pakistan," Chinese assistant foreign minister Wang Yi told newsmen in Beijing, ahead of Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan's visit to India. "China-Pakistan relations are not targeted at any third country. Likewise we do not hope to see China-Pakistan relations affected by a third country," he said. He also termed New Delhi's concerns on the Sino-Pakistani military nexus against India as "unfounded", saying that "China and Pakistan have not done anything wrong that goes against our international commitments." "China maintains normal bilateral relations with all countries, Pakistan included, in all areas, military included," he said, adding that China valued its ties with Pakistan, which supported Beijing during difficult times at various international fora. He denied continued Chinese aid to Pakistan's missile programme and termed strong Sino-Pakistan military co-operation as "normal." "It will be best not to have any linkage between India-Pakistan and India-China relations," he said, expressing hope of resumption of dialogue between India and Pakistan. "We are a responsible country. As a neighbour of South Asia, we don't want to see large-scale nuclear and missile proliferation in the region," Wang said. Recent United States media reports have alleged that China has stepped up shipment of speciality steel, guidance systems and technical expertise to Pakistan. PTI
