Deshmukh arrives in Delhi, may meet PM

E-Mail this report to a friend

Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilas Deshmukh arrived in New Delhi on Saturday for the conference on population.

Deshmukh has no appointment with Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, but is likely to call on him and brief him on the situation in the wake of his government's decision to prosecute Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray under section 153-A of the Indian Penal Code.

In Bombay, state Director General of Police Subhash Malhotra said police forces from Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Gujarat had been deployed in parts of Maharashtra as a precautionary measure.

"We had asked for additional forces and we have got them," a PTI report quoted him as having said.

On Friday night, Deshmukh had said the state was mobilising forces from neighbouring states after the Centre refused to accept its request for more paramilitary personnel to counter the Sena's threats of violence.
