Cauvery authority to meet on July 14

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Centre has convened a meeting of the Cauvery River Authority, headed by Prime Minister A B Vajpayee, in New Delhi on July 14. An official press release, giving Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's engagements for July, said that he would participate in the meeting on July 14.

The centre had earlier fixed the meeting for May 19, but it was postponed indefinitely following Karnataka's decision to boycott it, alleging that the meeting had been 'called in haste and at the behest of Tamil Nadu'.

The CRA was formed after Vajpayee negotiated a deal with the chief ministers of the four riparian states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Pondicherry for sharing Cauvery waters.

Its mandate is to ensure implementation of the interim award of the Cauvery Tribunal of June 1991 directing Karnataka to release a total of 205 tmc ft of water annually to Tamil Nadu.

Karunanidhi is also scheduled to participate in the Conference of Information Technology Ministers of all states in New Delhi on July 15.
