IAF chopper found; 3 persons may have survived

Josy Joseph in New Delhi

Indian Air Force pilots have spotted the wreckage of the IAF helicopter that crashed in the Kutch region of Gujarat on Sunday night with 10 Border Security Force personnel on board.

The wreckage was spotted 90 km away from the Nalia IAF station, well within Indian territory. Unconfirmed reports said three of the persons on board may have survived the crash.

The pilots reported seeing five bodies near the site of the crash. But with the tide rolling in, IAF sources ruled out any operation to retrieve the bodies until Tuesday morning.

IAF sources have also ruled out any Pakistani role in the crash. "It must have been either engine trouble or pilot error," said a senior IAF officer.
