Centre doing its best in Rajan case: Advani

Union Home Minister L K Advani Saturday objected to the Centre being criticised by the Maharashtra Government in the Chhota Rajan case and said that it would not help expedite the extradition of the underworld don, who was injured in a Bangkok shootout.

He told reporters at the Corporation Hall in the Brihanmumbai Muncipal Corporation (BMC) in Bombay, after unveiling a bronze bust of Iron Man Sardar Patel, that after the shootout, the government had informed the Thai administration through Interpol that Rajan be handed over to India.

Rajan's criminal records in Maharashtra, given by the state government, had also been forwarded to the Thai authorities.

Rajan's passport had been revoked and the government was proceeding in the case, he added.

State Home Minister Chhagan Bhujbal had said that the Centre was not expediting the process of Rajan's extradition even though the state government had submitted documents pertaining to his criminal records.

On the possibility of Pakistan's involvement in the recent crash of an air force helicopter in the Rann of Kutch, the home minister, who visited the area in the morning, said that the government was awaiting an IAF inquiry report. Lauding the bravery of the defence personnel in the region, he said apart from their heroism in war, bravery in peace times should also be recognised.

Referring to action to arrest forest brigand Veerappan, Advani said it was for the Karnataka and Tamil Nadu governments to chalk out the strategy and the Centre would fully support the action.

To a query on the aggressive stand of the Shiv Sena opposing statehood to Vidarbha, Advani, whose party is in favour of granting statehood to the region, said that there had been no difference in his party's relationship with the Sena due to the difference of opinion on this issue.

Lamenting the deteriorating state of the polity, Advani said the political class of today should draw inspiration from the administrative skills of Sardar Patel.
