Krishna meets Advani
for help to nab bandit

Intensifying the bid to nab sandalwood smuggler Veerappan, Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna Monday met Union Home Minister L K Advani and sought the Centre's assistance to catch the elusive bandit.

Krishna, however, declined to elaborate on the nature or quantum of the assistance sought.

Krishna told reporters he briefed the home minister about the "substantive and decisive" steps taken by both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to catch Veerappan.

"The objective is to cleanse our forests of criminal elements and the Union government has assured total support in our operations," Krishna said after a 30-minute meeting with Advani at the Parliament House.

Stating that the Special Task Force had already been activated from both sides, the chief minister said he hoped both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka would work in unison.

Asked whether Tamil Nadu would be serious in its efforts to nab Veerappan, Krishna hoped that the degree of seriousness shown by Karnataka would be reciprocated by Tamil Nadu.

Krishna's meeting with Central leaders followed a series of meetings between official delegations from both the states with Advani and Defence Minister George Fernandes last week.
