Efforts on to extradite Rajan,
says Bombay police chief

The Crime Branch of the Bombay police is making efforts to extradite gangster Chhota Rajan, who was injured in a shoot-out last month in Bangkok, Police Commissioner Mahesh Narayan Singh said on Friday.

Reacting to reports that Rajan was free, Singh told newspersons at the city police headquarters that the Crime Branch was making all efforts to extradite him. Rajan alias Rajendra Sadashiv Nikhalje alias Vijay Daman is in Thailand.

Singh said that his officers were in touch with their Thai counterparts and hoped that the Bombay police would bring Rajan to Bombay, where is wanted for 17 crimes.

Crime Branch sources said that the three-member team of the police, which has reached the Thai capital, interrogated Rajan. Earlier, their departure had been delayed as they were awaiting a green signal from the Union home and external affairs ministries.

"They have interrogated Rajan for an hour," sources told UNI in Bombay.

The three-member team, which left early on Thursday, comprises Assistant Commissioner of Police Shankar Kamble, Inspector Sudhakar Pujari and Sub-Inspector Hemant Desai.

The Thai police accepted the request of the Bombay police to interrogate Rajan, who is under medical supervision.

On September 15, the gangster was attacked by gunmen in Bangkok. The attack was engineered by Chhota Shakeel, the trusted lieutenant of Karachi-based don Dawood Ibrahim.
