Counsel in 'no hurry' to file appeal

Counsel to former prime minister P V Narasimha Rao and his cabinet colleague Buta Singh, who were sentenced to three years' rigorous imprisonment in the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha MPs' bribery case, have said there was no hurry to file an appeal against the conviction in the Delhi high court, as the trial court has given time till November 8.

"There is no hurry to file the appeal. I will discuss the case with Rao and then file the appeal in the high court well within the time given by the trial court," Rao's counsel R K Anand told PTI.

On whether he was satisfied with the quantum of sentence, he said, "How can one be satisfied when the conviction itself was wrong?"

On what would have been his plan of action had the court pronounced a sentence of more than three years, Anand said, "We would have filed the appeal and the bail application in the high court within 10 minutes of pronouncing the sentence by the trial court."

The trial court granted bail to Rao on a personal bond of Rs 2 lakh and a surety as the sentence was not more than three years. Had the sentence exceeded three years, Rao would have to move the high court for bail.

Rao's relative Varhalu Rao stood surety for him.

Counsel for Buta Singh also said he will challenge the conviction in the Delhi high court.

"We will certainly file an appeal against the judgment of the trial court convicting him in the bribery case," Satish Tamta told PTI.

Tamta, however, said there was no hurry to file the appeal as the court had granted bail to his client till November 8.

For Singh, his son Arvinder stood surety.
