Rajan appeals against passport revocation

Gangster Chhota Rajan, wounded in a gangland shooting in Thailand, has lodged an appeal with India's passport authorities following a decision to revoke his passport, a relative said on Monday.

"We have made a representation to the Government of India's chief passport officer," Rajesh Sharma, Rajan's brother-in-law said.

External affairs ministry spokesman R S Jassal said on Thursday that its embassy in Bangkok had taken the action on the grounds that Rajan's travel documents had been obtained using false information.

"The Thai authorities have been requested to keep Rajan under provisional arrest pending his extradition or deportation whichever is faster and more feasible under Thai laws and regulations," Jassal said. "The government is doing everything in its power to get Rajan to stand trial in Indian courts," he added.

The Indian embassy in Bangkok refused to comment, saying they were only acting as the intermediaries between their government and Thai authorities.

Thai foreign ministry and immigration officials have also refused to comment on the case.

Sharma, however, said that Rajan - known as Vijay Daman in Thailand - would fight any extradition attempt by the Indian government. "We will contest it in a court of law in Thailand. We will try and get some relief from the court," Sharma said.

A police team from Bombay is already in Bangkok. They are hoping to have him extradited to face trial on 17 counts of murder and other mob-related charges.

The saga began when Rajan was wounded in September by gunmen who burst into a Bangkok apartment and fired at him and his associate Rohit Verma in what appeared to be a shooting ordered by the Dubai-based Dawood Ibrahim, a sworn enemy of Rajan.

Three Pakistani men were among those arrested for the shooting.
