Sonia meets Narasimha Rao

In a show of solidarity, Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Friday night met former prime minister P V Narasimha Rao, who was convicted in the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha Members of Parliament bribery case.

Gandhi drove down to the 9, Motilal Nehru Marg residence of Rao, hours after two senior party leaders Pranab Mukherjee and Ajit Jogi had a meeting with the former prime minister, apparently on her instructions.

Former party president Sitaram Kesri also met Rao in the evening.

Among others who met Rao included former Haryana chief minister Bhajan Lal, who was acquitted in the same case, as also eminent lawyer and Congress Parliamentary Party secretary Kapil Sibal.

Soon after the pronouncement of the verdict, Rao's residence wore a deserted look for hours till the evening.

Apparently, shocked by the development concerning its former prime minister and party president, the All India Congress Committee had declined to comment on the issue saying it would react only after reading and studying the judgment.
