Ramesh Bhan in Tehran
Iranian President Mohammad Khattami has said Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee symbolises the Indian tradition of secularism and peaceful co-existence.
In his opening remarks at the delegation-level talks here on Tuesday night, Khattami said Iran had always admired India's secular credentials. Vajpayee was one such leader who had successfully maintained this tradition, he said.
The remarks assume significance since Iran has closely followed developments in India, particularly after the Ayodhya incident in 1992.
The two leaders also signed the Teheran Declaration which, among other things, calls for re-dedication to the principles of tolerance, pluralism and respect for diversity.
