Padmanabhaiah in Amsterdam to placate NSCM (I-M) leaders

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

The crucial talks between the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (Isak-Muivah) and Centre's emissary K Padmanabhaiah was to take place some time on Friday in Amsterdam.

Padmanabhaiah left for the Dutch capital on Thursday evening to meet the NSCN (I-M) leaders, who have refused to accept the Centre's decision on the revocation of the ceasefire extension.

Last week, the Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani had announced after consultations with NSCN (I-M) leadership, that the Indian government has decided to delete the three key words 'beyond territorial limits' from the June 14 agreement reached between the government negotiator Padmanabhiah and NSCN (I-M) leadership in Bangkok, Thailand.

The move has come at a time when there is speculation that former Lok Sabha speaker and Nationalist Congress Party leader P A Sangma would replace Padmanabhaiah as the Centre's representative.

Sangma hails from Meghalaya and is well acquainted with the problems of the Northeast.

While the Northeastern states have welcomed the proposal, Naga underground outfits have opposed it.
