Jaya ally blasts police brutality

Our Correspondent in Madras

"I cannot describe the way in which the police arrested a senior leader like Karunanidhi, I have no words," said Pataali Makkal Katchi founder Dr S Ramadoss, after a 15-minute meeting with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagham president in Central Jail, Madras.

"The police have behaved in a barbaric manner, I severely condemn it."

Ramadoss, the main ally of Jayalalithaa Jayaram's AIADMK in the May 2001 elections, said no political significance should be attached to his visit. "I went there on humanitarian grounds," the PMK founder-leader said.

"Karunanidhi’s legs are swollen, and he looks tired," Ramadoss reported. "His physical condition is weak though he has been trying to maintain his high spirits."

"I don't want to say anything," he said, when it was pointed out that Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had accused Union ministers Murasoli Maran and T R Baalu of behaving like "street rowdies".

Reacting to the demand that President's rule be imposed in Tamil Nadu, Ramadoss said it was surprising to hear the DMK ask for the use of Article 356 of the Constitution, since the party has all along been opposed to it.

Ramadoss maintained that his party, the PMK, was opposed to the use of Article 356. In the same breath, he added that Karunanidhi should be freed.
