Karunanidhi's release ordered,
but charges remain

N Sathiya Moorthy in Madras

The Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday ordered the release of former chief minister M Karunanidhi, charged in the 'flyover scam', taking into consideration his age and health.

But the charges against him have not been withdrawn.

Karunanidhi had earlier advised his lawyers against filing a bail application. But Union Minister for Environment and Forests T R Baalu, who called on the former chief minister at the Madras central jail, said he had now 'agreed' to come out of prison.

However, Karunanidhi's son and Madras Mayor M K Stalin would continue to remain in the Madurai Central Prison where he has been lodged in defiance of a judicial order to house him in the Madras prison.
