TN law minister accuses Maran of making up stories

Tamil Nadu Law Minister C Ponnaiyan charged Union Commerce Minister Murasoli Maran on Friday with purveying a "concocted" story that the state police attacked him when he was arrested.

"It is really shocking that Maran has put the entire blame on the police. It is a travesty of truth and a concocted story to say that police attacked him," Ponnaiyan said in a statement in Madras.

Referring to Maran's claim that he was hit near the pacemaker fitted to his heart, resulting in his heart beating much faster, and that the policemen had run away after he fainted, assuming that he was dead, Ponnaiyan said videocassettes recorded by the police clearly showed that it was Maran who had attacked and beaten them "mercilessly", forgetting that he was a minister of the Union and not supposed to take the law into his own hands.

On Maran's comments that police had acted on "somebody's instructions", he said there was no need to stoop to such levels. "...It was Karunanidhi and his coterie, which included Maran, who published a fake photograph purporting to show Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in the company of Sivarasan and Dhanu [the killers of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi]," he recalled.
