Bandh called in Assam to oppose Naga ceasefire

The protests over the extension of the ceasefire between the Centre and the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (I-M) to Naga-inhabited areas in Assam took a serious turn with a 48-hour bandh called in the North Cachar Hills district on Wednesday and the state's two powerful student organisations opposing the truce expansion.

The Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC-Progressive), Dimasa Students Union, North Cachar Hill Students Federation and the Dimasa Women's Society had called a 48-hour North Cachar district bandh from Wednesday to register their protest.

Both the hill districts, N C Hills and Karbi Anglong, are infested with NSCN militants.

The Asom Jitiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad and All Assam Students Union also expressed their opposition to extension of the ceasefire to Assam.

The AJYCP in a letter faxed to the Home Minister L K Advani, has threatened to launch a mass movement if the extension is not scrapped in 10 days.

The AASU warned the Centre to "desist from anti-Assam moves".

The Parishad said the ceasefire is "counter-productive and disruptive to the unity of the region and against the interest of the people of Assam".

The AJYCP president Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee said his organisation was not against peace in Nagaland, but added that it shouldn't be at the cost of peace in Assam.

He also pointed out that the Centre was objecting to ULFA's demand for sovereignty when the NSCN(I-M), too, had not given up its demand for independent Nagalim.
