Dismissing any threat to his government in the event of the Telugu Desam Party withdrawing support, Prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Sunday said, if required, the National Democratic Alliance coalition was ready to prove its strength in Parliament.
Talking to journalists after laying the foundation stone of the new secretariat complex in Goa, Vajpayee confirmed that the TDP, one of the major allies of the ruling NDA, was considering withdrawing support as a last resort on the Narendra Modi issue.
The TDP is firm on Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's dismissal and has also opposed the decision of the BJP national executive committee to dissolve the Gujarat assembly and seek a fresh mandate.
The prime minister refused to accept the contention that the BJP's stand had created an atmosphere of instability in the country.
Reacting to Congress president Sonia Gandhi's comment that he lashes out at his rivals when he loses his 'mental equilibrium', he quipped: "The statement itself indicates who has lost their mental balance."
The prime minister will leave for the national capital on Sunday.
