China not to withdraw diplomats from India, Pakistan

China on Tuesday said it has no plans to withdraw diplomats from India and Pakistan but appealed to the two sides to ease the current tension by resolving their differences through peaceful means.

Several western countries, including the US and UK, have issued travel warnings to their citizens and withdrawn non-essential diplomats in view of the tensions.

About its stand on the India-Pakistan tension, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said China sincerely hopes the two countries will show utmost restrain and resolve their disputes through negotiations and dialogue in a bid to maintain peace and stability in South Asia.

The relaxation of tensions between India and Pakistan would be in the interests of both countries, Liu said.

It is also what members of the international community, including China, hope to see, the spokesman added.

Chinese President Jiang Zemin would have separate meetings with Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf in Almaty on the sidelines of the Conference for Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA), he told reporters in Beijing.
