Karnataka slams Jaya for questioning CRA's jurisdiction

Taking strong objection to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa seeking modifications in the conduct of business of the Cauvery River Authority, Karnataka on Wednesday termed it as 'irrelevant and unconstitutional'.

"Constitutional validity of the CRA cannot be questioned and such an action is inappropriate," Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs D B Chandre Gowda said.

The minister said the jurisdiction of the CRA, constituted under the orders of the Supreme Court, has been outlined. Besides, it was set up with consensus among the four riparian states, he added.

He stated that the Supreme Court, in its recent orders, had subjected the decisions on the Cauvery case to the purview of the CRA.

Ridiculing Jayalalithaa's attempts to 'throw a gauntlet at the drop of a hat', Gowda said it was unfortunate that Jayalalithaa was 'seeking changes to a national action' -- to the Inter-state River Disputes Act of 1956 -- and added 'if all the states felt the need for it, Karnataka has no objection'.
