Karnataka chief minister
begins 'padayatra'

Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna began an eight-day 'padayatra' from the Raja Rajeshwari temple on the Bangalore-Mysore road on Monday morning in a show of solidarity with the farmers of the Cauvery basin.

Karnataka had last week refused to honour a Supreme Court directive to release 9,000 cusecs [0.8 thousand million cubic feet] of water every day to Tamil Nadu as per the orders of the Cauvery River Authority.

Krishna, accompanied by his wife Prema, offered prayers at the Raja Rajeshwari temple before setting off on the yatra.

Krishna would walk about 15 to 20 km a day and the trek would take him through his home district of Mandya to the Kabini reservoir in Mysore district.

The opposition, however, has termed Krishna's padayatra a "political gimmick" to cover up the "mishandling of the Cauvery issue" by his government.
