DMK suggests bandh, boycotts all-party meeting

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

The opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in Tamil Nadu has mooted a daylong bandh (general strike) to protest against Karnataka's refusal to comply with the orders of the Supreme Court and the Cauvery River Authority.

Party president M Karunanidhi asked the all-party meeting convened by Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday to consider the proposal. The DMK, however, boycotted the meeting itself.

Karunanidhi said that if the meeting did not favour the bandh call, his party would take it up on its own. He also sought the support of other parties in the country on this matter.

Meanwhile, a delegation of the Tamil film industry led by director Bharati Raja met Jayalalithaa in the secretariat to declare that it stands by its decision to hold a protest rally in the lignite town of Neyveli on Saturday, October 12.

Bharati Raja said the delegation discussed the security arrangements for the agitation with the chief minister, but was not sure if superstar Rajnikanth would participate.

Rajnikanth, who is in Rishikesh, has asked his colleagues in the film industry to change the venue to Chennai to avoid the possibility of violence. He said that while he supports the demand for water, he would not be part of any action that would 'bloody' the Cauvery.
