Cauvery row: Dawn-to-dusk
strike begins in TN

A 12-hour general strike called by all political parties in Tamil Nadu, including the main opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, began at 6 am on Wednesday amidst tight security.

The strike, called to condemn Karnataka's refusal to release Cauvery waters to Tamil Nadu despite Supreme Court and Cauvery River Authority directives, is likely to bring life to a standstill in the state.

Early in the morning, there were no signs of any public transport on Chennai roads. Several long-distance trains were also either cancelled or diverted, railway sources said. However, airline operations were normal.

Police sources said no untoward incidents have been reported from any part of the state so far. Security has been beefed up in sensitive areas, they added.
