Krishna cuts short padayatra by two days

Fakir Chand in Bangalore

Brushing aside protests by farmers' bodies spearheading the Cauvery agitation, Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna on Wednesday continued his march to Mandya and Mysore districts, but cut it short by two days.

Resuming the yatra from Ramanagaram, Krishna said the rest of the 100-km journey up to Krishna Raja Sagar dam in Mandya district would be on four wheels.

"With the padayatra getting a huge response, and a large number of people joining the foot march, the busy Bangalore-Mysore state highway is getting blocked, causing massive traffic jams and inconvenience to the general public," Krishna said.

Krishna would address a rally in Mandya on October 12.

Official sources said Kannada thespian Rajakumar is likely to take part in the yatra on any of the next two days.

Many ministers and hundreds of Congress workers have joined Krishna at Ramanagaram on the third day of the march towards Chennapatna, where he will halt for the night to resume his journey to his home constituency, Maddur, on Thursday.

After a meeting with his senior ministerial colleagues on Tuesday night, Krishna decided not to yield to the demand of farmers' committee in his home district of trouble-hit Mandya to call off the march.

Krishna began his 129-km padayatra from Bangalore on October seven saying he wanted to restore peace and to instill confidence in farmers that the government was with them.

Opposition parties have attacked the yatra as a political gimmick to cover up the lapses of the government.
