DMK to boycott all-party meeting in
Tamil Nadu

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in Tamil Nadu has decided to boycott the all-party meeting on the Cauvery water issue, called by Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Friday evening.

Following a farmer's suicide, Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna had suspended the release of water to Tamil Nadu on Thursday.

In a statement, DMK president and former chief minister M Karunanidhi said the opposition parties "are not slaves to attend meetings at such a short notice".

He said the chief minister had ignored the opposition and decided to fight the state's battle on her own.

At the same time, he appealed to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to intervene in the issue and render justice to the farmers of Tamil Nadu.
