Karnataka wants new tribunal on sharing Krishna waters

Water Resources Minister H K Patil said Karnataka had filed a complaint with the Union water resources ministry on Thursday, seeking a tribunal to resolve the tangle, after efforts to strike a negotiated settlement on sharing the surplus waters under the "B" scheme award of the Bachawat Tribunal failed.

Karnataka said it was forced to seek the constitution of a new tribunal as Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra had built large-scale projects to use the surplus waters of the river despite its objections, putting at risk the interests of Karnataka's farmers.

Patil said Maharashtra had 'illegally' executed the Telugu Ganga Srisailam left and right bank canals, which have a huge storage capacity, and was refusing to share the surplus waters.

Patil said Karnataka had also drawn the Centre's attention to the hardship being caused to the state by the objections of Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra to raising the height of the Almatti dam.

Karnataka withdrew its petition filed before the Supreme Court on the Krishna issue on September 3, saying it would approach the Centre for setting up a tribunal to adjudicate on sharing the surplus waters.
