Kolkata cop's killing: Woman requested to aid probe

January 08, 2003 05:18 IST

In a bid to strengthen the case against the five policemen responsible for the death of traffic sergeant Bapi Sen, Police Commissioner Sujay Chakraborty on Tuesday renewed his appeal to the young woman, whom Sen saved, to come forward and aid the investigation.

Sen was beaten unconscious by five off-duty constables when he tried to stop them from harassing the woman on New Year's eve. He died on Monday.

The police department, which is already in the process of framing murder charges under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code against the five policemen, would be able to strengthen its case if the woman and her companion gave their version of the event to the police, Deputy Commissioner Sivaji Ghosh said.

The five policemen are currently in police custody, he said.

The police department is raising funds for Sen's family and assured that, in due time, Sen's wife would be offered a job as per her qualifications and ability, Ghosh said.
