Three students from Bangalore have been shortlisted for the Volvo Young Environmentalists Award 2005 in Sweden.
The team, named Eco Wizards and comprising Yogesh Nayak, Saurav Banerjee and Rohit Mohan and teacher Shankarjyoti Dhar, will compete with teams from 12 other countries in the finals, which will be held from May 6 to 11.
The selected project is on recycling waste plastic for road construction. The students said they would like to show that it was possible to recycle plastic waste to our advantage.
Volvo will present cash prizes ranging from $ 4,000 to $ 10,000 to the top teams, to be utilised to continue their eco-conservation project, a Volvo India official said.
The global winners will also get a chance to participate in the United Nations environment programme in the US later this year.
The awards are part of the Volvo Adventure project -- a web-based competition motivating young people between the age of 10 and 16 to undertake projects that conserve the environment, the official said.
