Terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir [Images] are on the run and steps are being taken to bring infiltration from across the border to a "very low level", Army Chief General J J Singh said on Friday.

"Terrorists are on the run. More terrorists are surrendering," Singh said after inaugurating the new campus of the Army Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology in Bangalore.

Singh said infiltration attempts are still being made, particularly during the summer months when the terrorists make more attempts to sneak into Kashmir because the "weather is conducive to that". 'When it snows, it is difficult," he said.

"So, like earlier, we are geared up for this kind of tactics of the terrorists," he said, noting that the army recently foiled a few infiltration attempts.

"We will continue to do that because no country in the world can allow armed men with weapons, explosives and other equipment to (infiltrate) in a clandestine manner," he said.

The army is also careful while accepting the surrender of terrorists. "While accepting surrenders, we should not accept some people who come with the intention of surrendering later carry out acts of sabotage and subversion," Singh said.

"So we have to be careful about whom we accept," he said.

Singh said information about the movement of terrorists was provided to troops by the local populace.

"Our people (army) are being accepted more and more as guarantors of the security of the common people. They re looking up to the army to give them a secure environment and they have rejected violence," the general said.

"All these indications are telling us that our strategy is successful and the situation in Kashmir and also in the North-East is very well," he said.
