Bajrang Dal Convenor, Mahendra Kumar who was arrested in connection with the attacks on churches at Mangalore has been released on bail on Monday.

The magistrate at Mangalore who was hearing the plea filed by Mahendra Kumar ordered that he be released on bail on the condition that he furnished one surety with a bond of Rs 10000.

Further the court also ordered that Kumar should sign a register at the police station on the first and 15th of every month.

Kumar's counsel, PP Hedge told rediff.com that the state had opposed the bail plea of his client. He however argued before the court that this was a conspiracy to target his client. Hedge further told the court that the arrest was politically motivated and the arrest came in the wake of the centre pressuring the state in the form of an advisory.

The state on its part argued that it is in the interest of the state's security that Mahendra Kumar not be released. The state submitted that Kumar was responsible in creating disharmony in the state and hence had been taken into custody.

Hegde said that the release formalities may take a while. He also said that only once the sureties and the bail bond are furnished will his client be released.

Meanwhile a Chickmaglur court has issued a warrant against Mahendra Kumar. His lawyer says that they may seek recourse before the Chickmaglur court and only then secure his release from the Mangalore jail where he is lodged at present.
