Jain report will have serious implications: Congress

The recommendations of the Jain Commission on the Rajiv Gandhi assassination will have serious implications if the versions published in the newsmagazine India Today are correct, senior Congress Working Committee member Pranab Mukherjee said on Monday.

The report had indicated the involvement of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi in the activities of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, allegedly behind Rajiv Gandhi's killing, and had alleged lapses on the part of former prime ministers V P Singh and Chandra Shekhar and Finance Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram.

"The government is expected to take action on the report," Mukherjee said, adding that the action taken was expected to be tabled, along with the Jain Commission report, on the opening day of the winter session of Parliament.

If proper action taken, the Congress would have no complaints, he said. Mukherjee said the party would not like to take any step in the absence of an authenticated version of the Jain Commission report. It would wait till the report was tabled in Parliament before taking up the matter, he said.

Mukherjee said the report was not old wine in a new bottle, as described by some United Front constituents. It could also not be dismissed as bogus, he said.
