asiad-athletics sunita rani fetches silver in 5000m bangkok, dec 18 (uni) nineteen-year-old sunita rani missed the women's 5000-metre gold by two hundredths of a second in a photo finish at the 13th asian games here today. The middle distance runner from punjab surprised everyone with her stunning run to finish second with a timing of 15:54.47 on the heels of supriati sutono (indonesia) who claimed gold clocking 15:54.45. Michiko shimizu (japan) returned with 15:55.36 to bag the bronze. This was the second medal for sunita, having earlier claimed a bronze in the 1500 m which was won by jyotirmoyee sikdar. With this silver, india's spoils from athletics include two golds, four silvers and seven bronze. Sunita, who rewrote her national record of 15:59.34 which she set at calcutta inter-state meet in november, led the field for most of the race. The only time she slackened was two meters from the tape line and that cost her the gold. Sunita, sutono, shimizu and china's chunmei wang formed the lead group of four and were locked in a neck-and-neck battle to gain the top spot. The indian champion hung on gamely throughout the 12.5-lap race and looked set to win a surprise gold before the indonesian pipped her at the finish.
