Bullseye!Norris Pritam in Kuala LumpurThe Malaysian tourist resort of Langkawi has proved to be a happy hunting ground for the Indian shooters. On Thursday, Roopa Unnkrishnan shot gold in the sport rifle individual event to add to the two medals already picked up by Indians at the venue. Roopa's performance of 590 was also better than the existing Commonwealth Games record held by Elsa Kotze of the Republic of South Africa. A Rhodes scholar, pursuing her MBA degree in London, 26-year-old Roopa had to fight till the last moment before she emerged the winner. Roopa began with a steady 98 and then fired 99,99, 97, 99 and 98 for her 590, three short of her personal best achieved in the National Championship in Delhi early this year. Carolyn Quigley of Australia was close on Roopa's heels in the first three rounds, firing 99, 98 and 98. She then raced ahead with two rounds of 100 each. But in the final round, she lost concentration and slumped down to a poor 95. At the end both had an identical total of 590. But in the play-off for the gold, Roopa was bang on target. The bronze was won by Sally Johnston of New Zealand with 587.
