Former 'keeper P Krishnamurthy dead

Former Indian wicket keeper P Krishnamurthy died following a cardiac arrest late on Wednesday night.

He was 52. He is survived by his wife and son.

The cricketer made his Test debut against the West Indies in the 1971 away series. He played in all the five Tests and accounted for seven catches and one stumping. He scored 33 runs which came from six innings with 20 as his highest score.

The Indians won the series against the West Indies for the first time.

Krishnamurthy was also a member of the Indian team which beat England and won the away series in 1971. However, he did not not play any of the Tests in England as Farokh Engineer kept wickets for the side.

In fact, he never played a Test again. Engineer returned for the home series against England in 1972 and the West Indies in 1974-75, and the away series in England. Not a good batsman, he lost out to Karnataka's Syed Kirmani when Engineer retired.

Krishnamurthy shot into the limelight with his superb performance against West Zone at Bombay in 1970. He kept wicket for medium pacers like D Govindraj and Syed Abid Ali, spinners E A S Prasanna, B S Chandrasekhar, S Venkataraghavan and V V Kumar.
