Dravid is Castrol's Cricketer of the YearKarnataka batsman Rahul Dravid was chosen the Castrol Indian Cricketer of the Year. The decision was announced at a function in New Delhi tonight. The others nominated for the award were captain Sachin Tendulkar, fast bowler Javagal Srinath, legspinner Anil Kumble and batsman Saurav Ganguly. The five players were nominated on the basis of their performance in seven Tests and 46 One-Day Internationals played from October 1998 to September this year. Points were awarded for aggregate runs, batting and bowling average, wickets and catches. A panel of former and current cricketers chose the winner. Dravid got Rs 500,000 in cash and a trophy. The four others received Rs 50,000 and a trophy each. In his acceptance speech, Dravid said it was a great honour to be chosen ahead of his illustrious India teammates. Bombay's left-arm spinner Rajesh Pawar was chosen Castrol Junior Cricketer of the Year. He got the award for his career-best 6 for 19 in the Ranji Trophy match against Maharashtra yesterday.
