Pakistan too good for Windies

Pakistan opened their campaign in the three-nation Coca Cola Trophy Cricket tournament with a resounding 130-run victory over the West Indies in Sharjah last night.

Electing to bat, the Pakistanis piled up 260 for five from their allotted 50 overs, thanks to superb knocks from opener Saeed Anwar (72), Inzamam-Ul-Haq (71) and Yousuf Youhana (48).

They then bundled out the West Indies for a paltry 130 in 34.4 overs. Jimmy Adams, who starred for the West Indies in their three- wicket win over Sri Lanka in the opening match, did not bat after he had aggravated a leg injury.

Anwar, whose 72 off 87 balls included four sixes and three fours, was chosen man of the match.

Pakistan meet Sri Lanka in the third match of the tournament today.

Ricardo Powell (36) and opener Shervin Campbell (34) were the only West Indian batsmen who put up any kind of resistance.

Wavell Hinds (13) and Ridley Jacobs (16) were the only others to get into double figures.

Powell's 36 came off as many balls and included a six and two fours, while Campbell hit four fours in his 58-ball essay.

For the Pakistanis, medium-pacer Abdur Razzaq took two wickets for 26 while 18-year-old spinner Shoaib Malik, making his debut, got two for 34.

West Indies skipper Brian Lara, who opened the innings with Campbell, failed to get going yet again and was caught by Moin Khan behind the stumps off Pakistan captain Wasim Akram in the fifth over. Lara made only eight in a total of 23.

Hinds also did not last long and was caught by Aamir Sohail at gully off Azhar Mahmood, making it 45 for two in the 13th over.

Shivnaraine Chanderpaul seemed out of his element and was soon run out by a direct throw from Hasan Raza when the total was 58. The left-hander contributed only five.

Campbell departed, trapped leg-before-wicket by Shoaib Malik, at 79 and when Powell was stumped by Moin off the same bowler, the West Indians were reeling at 114 for five after 28 overs.

Wickets continued to fall at quick intervals and the rest of the innings folded up soon.
