Buchanan appointed Australia coachThe Australian Cricket Board today named Queensland's John Buchanan as the new Australian cricket coach. Buchanan, 46, was appointed to the position for the next two years following the recent retirement of Geoff Marsh. Buchanan, who guided Queensland to their first ever Sheffield Shield title, won the job from a number of candidates including former Australian wicketkeeper and New Zealand coach Steve Rixon. ''It is a great honour to be named Australian coach,'' Buchanan said. ''Since I was a young fellow I could remember the rich traditions of Australian cricket and to be given a chance to be just a small part of that is very special to me.'' ACB chairman Denis Rogers said Buchanan was the unanimous choice of the board's five-man coaching sub-commitee. ''He's got a special skill in terms of man-management and communication skills in gaining the confidence (of the team),'' Rogers said. UNI
