Golden 'lift' by Romi Devi

Teenager Romi Devi did India proud in the Asian Weightlifting championships at Wu Han, China, winning three gold medals in the 75 kg junior event.

The 19-year-old CRPF lifter, who participated in an international event for the first time, took a formidable lead of 12.5 kg over her rivals with a powerful snatch of 95 kg for her first gold. The second best effort in the snatch came from China's Liu-Tang Hui, who lifted only 82.5 kg.

As per information received by former national selector Wg. Cdr.P.K. Mahanand in Delhi, Devi increased her lead with an impeccable jerk of 110 kg to claim the second gold and clinched the third with a total of 205 kg. The silver was bagged by Liu Tang Hui, who lifted 190 kg in total, with a snatch of 82.5 kg and jerk of 107.5. The bronze went to Tsuji-Miho, who lifted 180 kg.

With the three-gold haul, the Indian medal tally in the meet went up to 20 - 3 gold, 4 silver and 13 bronze.

Ujwala Mane, also of CRPF, winner of a gold medal at the World Police Games, made a valiant bid to win a medal in the 75 kg category in the senior section. However, she finished fourth, with a total of 212.5 kg, which was good enough for a medal in the Asian meet.

The were no medals for the Indian men.

Two ace Indian women lifters - Kunjarani Devi and Karnam Malleswari are not taking part in the meet as they are preparing for the World championships.
