Rehman banned from leaving PakistanFormer Pakistan Test cricketer Ataur Rehman has been banned from leaving the country after retracting a match-fixing allegation against suspended captain Wasim Akram, state media reported yesterday. The official APP news agency said ex-Test fast bowler Rehman had been put on the exit control list on the orders of justice Malik Qayyum of the Lahore High Court, who is conducting an inquiry into corruption in Pakistan cricket. Qayyum passed the order on Friday after Rehman withdrew an earlier statement in which he said Akram had paid him to bowl badly during a tour match in New Zealand, APP reported. Appearing before Qayyum, Rehamn ''informed the judge that his earlier affidavit was based on some misunderstanding. He submitted a new affidavit declining any knowledge about match-fixing", APP said. Qayyum said he took the action because Rehman was liable for contempt, APP reported. No date has been set for when Qayyum, appointed by the government last September, would finish his inquiry. Akram, former captain Salim Malik and batsman Ijaz Ahmed have been banned by Pakistan cricket authorities from playing for their country until the probe is over. Rehman returned to Pakistan on Friday morning from England, where he has been playing club cricket, APP said. UNI
