Paes-Bhupathi enter US Open semi-finalsMen's doubles top seeds Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi entered the semi-finals of the 1999 US Open tennis tournament, beating Ben Elwood and Mike Tebbut of Australia in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. The match failed to rise to any great heights and the Indian pair overwhelmed the Aussies with ease, breaking them once in the fourth game of the first set and then again in the third game of the second set. The Australians failed to return the compliment. Paes and Bhupathi had beaten Justin Gimelstob and Richey Reneberg of the United States 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 yesterday, while Elwood and Tebbut had got the better of Neville Godwin and Marcus Ondruska of South Africa 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 on Sunday. With this victory, the Indian doubles pair has entered the semi-finals of each of the four Grand Slam tournaments this year. Paes and Bhupathi lost in the final of the Australian Open, but then went on to become the first Indian pair to win a Grand Slam by taking the French Open title at the Roland Garros. They followed it up by winning the doubles title at Wimbledon as well to make this the best year of their partnership.
