Borde replaces WadekarFormer Test star Chandu Borde and Rajinder Goel were named chairmen of the senior and junior selection committees respectively on the second day of the annual general meeting of the Board of Control for Cricket in India in Jaipur today. Borde will replace Ajit Wadekar, while Goel will take over from Hemant Kanitkar. Announcing the new appointments, J Y Lele, honorary secretary of the BCCI, told newsmen that Borde's name was recommended by West Zone and it was accepted. Former international medium pacer T.A. Shekhar, who is working as assistant coach with former Australian pace ace Dennis Lillee at the M.R.F Pace Foundation, replaced Shivlal Yadav as the selector from South Zone. The other three members of the selection committee are Anil Deshpande (Central), Ashok Malhotra (East) and Madan Lal (North). Ashish Sinha from East, Mahender Rajdev from South, Subhash Kangralkar from West and Shashikant Kandekar from Central were named junior selectors. Replying to a question, Lele said Kapil Dev and Roger Binny, appointed coaches for the senior and junior teams respectively, have conveyed their consent to the board. He said the BCCI put on record appreciation of the services of Ajit Wadekar, Anshuman Gaekwad, coach of the senior team, and K. Srikkanth, coach of India 'A' team. Asked why Srikkanth was relieved of his services, Lele said, "The board thought so, and appointed Binny in his place." Lele disclosed that physio Anthony Liepus is a 29-year-old man from Australia, based in South Africa. "He is professionally very sound. He is a doctor in sports medicine, besides being an excellent trainer," he said. The treasurer of the board, Kishore Rungta, had yesterday said Liepus will be paid Australian $2000 per week, but Lele denied that any remuneration was fixed, stating the problem of foreign exchange had to be resolved first. Lele announced that the AGM ratified the working committee's decision to have a national academy and five zonal academies in order to activate the supply lines of young cricketing talents. He said that a working group, comprising outgoing president Raj Singh Dungarpur as chairman and Sunil Gavaskar and Brijesh Patel as members, was formed for the purpose. The BCCI also decided to send physical trainers-cum physiotherapists abroad to gain expertise so that they can contribute to the modern demands of the game in the years to come. Lele said that the boad will also urge all associations playing in the Ranji Trophy to appoint physical trainers for their respective teams. He said only one physical trainer-cum-physiotherapist will be appointed for the senior Indian team.
