Mohota holds GM Szidonia; Kidambi scores

International Women's Master Nisha Mohota (2.5 points) of India held second seed Grandmaster Vajda Szidonia (2.5) to a draw, while her compatriot Sundararajan Kidambi (2) registered his first victory in the boys' section at the World Juniors and Girls' Chess Championship in Yeveran, Armenia, today.

In a fourth round match, Nisha came up with a creditable performance as she took on a Grandmaster for the first time in her career. Romanian Vajda played the Benoni defence against a queen pawn opening by Nisha. Going out of the book, Nisha sacrificed two pawns to get more space and play in the centre, but missed some chances for a clear-cut advantage. She regained the pawns but the game ended in a draw.

Kidambi defeated Zhao-Zung-Yuan (1) of Australia. Zhao played the Slav defence, which was converted to Dutch Stonewall. Kidambi opened the centre and got the advantage of two bishops and attacked the king side. He won the exchange and emerged victorious on the 37th move.

In other matches in the boys' section: Zhang Pengniav (3.5) of China played a good game and defeated Arutiunian Dant (Georgia). He now shares the lead with GM Asrian Kaven (3.5) of Armernia. Kaven played a quick draw with GM Gatkin Alexander (3) of Russia.

In the girls' section, all the top five boards ended in a draw. Kouvatsum Maria (3.5) of Greece is the sole leader in the group.
