Thomas may yet get to run in Sydney

European 400 metres champion Iwan Thomas may yet compete in the Sydney Olympics despite being controversially left out of the British team last week.

Thomas, passed over by selectors after being sidelined for much of the year by injury, will run in Leverkusen, Germany, on Sunday in the last meeting before the British team for the Games beginning next month is finalised.

"There are still two places up for grabs in the relay squad, and there is also the possiblity that he could be named as the reserve for the individual 400 metres team," a spokeswoman for UK Athletics told Reuters on Thursday.

Thomas claimed selectors had lied to him about his Sydney chances, telling him he could miss last weekend's trials because a 400 metres place would be left open until August 21. The provisional team was named on Tuesday.

"He (Thomas) will need to come out on Sunday and put in a good run to show people he's back on the right road and he's fit. I don't think anyone's expecting him to run 44.8 (seconds)," she said.

Mark Richardson, Sean Baldock and Jamie Baulch occupy the three team places for the individual event, but the findings of an IAAF doping investigation against Richardson could hit his chances.

"Thomas' time on Sunday is not so important, he just needs to show he'll be on the pace come September," Lewis said.
