Samaranch confident of Sydney security

IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch remains confident about the safety of next month's Olympics despite the security scare over a possible plot to blow up a nuclear research reactor in Sydney.

"I believe this will be a safe Olympics," Samaranch said in an interview with Spanish state television.

"Every day there are negative stories but I don't have any doubts in the great work done by the organising country.

"I don't have any fears, although of course I won't be able to be completely calm until the last day of the Games.

"We should remember that since Munich in 1972 there hasn't been a single important incident within Olympic installations."

Samaranch was speaking after New Zealand police said they had uncovered a possible plot by Afghan refugees to blow up a nuclear research reactor in Sydney during the Games.

Australian authorities said they believed there was "no credible threat" at this time to the reactor on the outskirts of the city.
