Apart from the defeat by Italy -- after a penalty shoot-out -- the Dutch lost only one of their 14 games this year, a World Cup qualifier against Portugal in October.
Brazil were named team of the year from 1994 to 1999.
Nigeria won the award for the most improved team of the year after rising to 30th place in the rankings.
