Greene sheds the bluesBernhard Krieger in RomeUnited States sprint star Maurice Greene rebounded from two recent defeats when he stormed to victory over 100m and 200m at the Italian stop of the Golden League series which also saw one world record and five world best marks of the year. The three-time world champion and 100m world record holder Greene won the dash in 9.97 seconds yesterday and the 200m one hour later in 20.02 seconds. The world record came from Norway's Trine Solberg-Hattestad in the women's javelin with 68.22m. She bettered the previous mark of 67.09m from Greek Mirela Manjani-Tzelili. All previous results were scrapped in late 1999 after the javelin was modified. The 100m hurdles world champion Gail Devers of the US set a world best with 12.47 seconds and so did 400m hurdler Eric Thomas (47.96 seconds) and Nezha Bidouane (53.53). Kenyan 1,500m ace Noah Ngeny posted a world best 3:29.99 minutes and Algerian sensation Ali Saidi-Sief improved the 5,000m mark to 12:50.87, almost 10 seconds faster than world and Olympic champion Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia ran on Sunday in Nuremberg. ''I am very satisfied, but not really surprised as I have worked hard for it. This was my first 5,000m race and possibly my last. I am normally a 1,500m runner, but don't know what I will run in Sydney,'' said Saidi-Sief. Greene, 25, has the 100m year-best with 9.91 seconds in Osaka two months ago, but came here with two European defeats at Helsinki and Athens in the past fortnight. He was untroubled yesterday in the 100m with 9.97 assisted by a light tailwind of 0.7 metres per second. Nigerian Francis Obikwelu and Trinidad and Tobago ace Ato Boldon both had 10.00.
